angel island poems

More than 200 Chinese poems were etched into the barracks walls of Angel Island, an immigration processing station in early 20th century San Francisco. These poems conveyed the laborers’ homesickness and despair after long detentions aimed at keeping out Asian immigrants after the Chinese Exclusion Act.

Poems published in Island: Poetry and History of Chinese Immigrants on Angel Island, 1910-1940, by Him Mark Lai, Genny Lim and Judy Yung
